New Hampshire's Civil Unions Law Becomes Effective on January 1, 2008. As of that date, eligible New Hampshire residents who previously entered into civil unions or legal marriages in other jurisdictions will be deemed to be partners in a New Hampshire civil union. Likewise, individuals who enter into a civil union in New Hampshire after the New Year will be subject to the new law. This CLE will review the civil unions law and available guidance on entering into a civil union. We will examine the effect of the new law on major areas of existing state law, such as estate planning and probate, family law, benefits and employment law. In this examination, we will also consider related federal law which will be unaffected by - but integral to - the application of the state's civil unions law to these areas of legal practice.
